This is a killer example of great historical fiction!  It was nominated for a Gateway Readers Award this year, and it’s easy to tell why.  The story follows 4 main characters as they try to survive the end of WWII, trapped between the Russian and German armies.  All four have secrets: pretending to be a German soldier to steal art, survivor’s guilt, a fake past they pretend was real, and a hidden baby; some will be exposed, some not.  Everything comes together in the end, as the characters meet on a ship to escape.  Each chapter is from the point of view of one of the four characters, with a clear tone, it really makes you anticipate when their stories converge.
